John Paul "J. P." Calderon (born September 5, 1975) is an American professional volleyballplayer, model and reality television participant. He first appeared on television as a contestant onSurvivor: Cook Islands, the 13th season of the CBS reality show. Later, he returned to television by appearing in several seasons of The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency. As part of his experience there he made an appearance in the February 2007 cover story of Instinct magazine.

Calderon was born in Santa Monica, California and grew up in Marina del Rey, California in aRoman Catholic family. He attended St. Bernard’s Catholic High School and then California State University, Long Beach, where he played for the school's nationally-ranked men's volleyball team. He graduated with a degree in speech communication in 2000. Calderon is of Costa Ricandescent.
Calderon was an assistant coach for the Long Beach State University women's volleyball team for five years. He began his professional volleyball career in 2004 and became a nationally ranked Association of Volleyball Professionalsplayer.

In 2007, Calderon joined the cast of The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency. Stating that he had for a long time wished to model, Calderon came to an open casting call held in the first episode of Season 2. He was called back in episode 2 and eventually signed to the agency. The third episode saw Calderon being approached to appear on the cover of Instinct magazine, a publication that requires that its male cover models be openly gay. Calderon came out as gay on his appearance in the February 2007 issue, which included the cover, a photo spread, feature story and interview. "All of my fears, everything that I was scared of... it was the complete the opposite," he said. "It's been great. All of my friends, the volleyball world, absolutely everybody has been supportive. No one has shut me out."

It was announced during the 4th season finale of The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency that Calderon will head the male division of the agency when it moves to New York City. Calderon is also signed to KULT Model Agency in Germany.

Face- Can someone buy me a plane ticket to L.A.?
  • Hair- No bells and whistles here. Normal and simplicity at its best.(.6)
  • Eyes- Cute puppy eyes. Nice shape and cute brown color. Simple and sweet. (.7)
  • Facial Structure- Well, he picked the right profession for that facial structure. Defined jawline, high cheekbones, and broad forehead for that perfect model look. (1)
  • Mouth- I am loving this smile! He should smile more often. Also, those lips are just to my liking. (.5)
  • Other- We get an occasional shadow, stubble, and even full facial hair which is quite sexy. That evens out the youthful looks and adds ruggedness. (.4)
  • Total+ 5- (8.2)
Body- Being a model, the body is a high given! As you can see from the pictures on the side, he has a magnificent body. Lean and taut. Great abdominal muscles, obliques, and sexy chest. Strong and built arms along with broad shoulders. Also, a slightly defined Apollo's Belt! My favorite part. But try and keep the razor away? Models these days... (9)

Personality/Character- As a [male] model, it must be difficult to stay in the limelight. Well, unless you are Heidi, Gisele, or Adriana. I do not really know any male models with as high a status as them. I could be wrong, but then again if they were that famous... I should know, right? Well if you're like me and do not know about any famous male models, you have to go digging for them. So it is expected to find little or no interviews with them. Especially television interviews with Ellen, Conan, Letterman, etc... J.P. fits that bill.

But good old Instinct Magazine satisfies me, somewhat, with their interview with J.P. Reading not your thing? Then what are you doing reading this? Haha, just kidding. Here is J.P. on Janice's Modeling blah blah talking about the potential magazine cover and inevitably coming out... on television... in front of thousands of people... if not millions.

“I wasn’t a model then,” he explains. “I was becoming a model. Now I’m comfortable with who I am. I’m gay. So what? I’m a model and with this issue [of Instinct], I think people will see a big difference. The fact that I was coming out in a gay magazine [last year] and wearing clothes that looked—at least to me—stereotypically gay. It was just so much…gayness all at once, and I didn’t want any respect taken away from me. And that’s a stereotype. That was wrong. But that’s where I was at last year. Today it’s different.” (Evolution of a Model Man)

Hey, the man is honest. Awesome! Down to earth and has a good sense of humor. If you are an avid reader of my blog, you should know that these traits always get a high score. Courage does too. J.P. had the courage to come out on cable television and that was brave. Hell, it helped his career even more!

"Even though I’ve come out, I think I still have a lot to come to terms with. And that’s just a part of the journey.” (Evolution of a Model Man)

I wonder how much of that journey was accomplished since '08; when this article was written. Well anyway, read the interview. It's dated, but interesting and awesome. (9)

Worth- Well, he was in the public eye on national television when he appeared on Survivor: Cook Islands and Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency. However, those shows are not the most watched and remembered shows. At least he was on the cover of Instinct and now he will be remembered in the gay community for years to come, that is, if you have the magazine. But hey, J.P. is only starting. I'd love to see where he is headed. (7)
